About “Fiber Optics”

We are seeking artwork that is composed of or integrates fiber. We are looking through the lens of fiber work being traditionally done by women in the home to more contemporary representations outside of it. Historically, fiber art has been overlooked by established art circles, being regarded as a lesser “fine art” like painting or sculpture. Today many museums are dedicating major shows to fiber pieces and the art market has seen a major price increase in craft-based works.

Any media where the majority or focus of the work is fiber is acceptable for this show. This could be 2D or 3D art forms. Acceptable techniques and media include: basketry, bojagi, crochet, embroidery, fusing, hand tufting, knitting, knotting, latch hooking, macramé, mixed media, natural and synthetic fibers, needle felting, nuno felting, quilting, rug hooking, sashiko, shibori, tapestry, weaving, wet felting, and wire.

DEADLINE: Submit work by September 16

Artwork will be displayed at Ignite Studio, in the lower level of the Hamilton East Public Library at: 5 Municipal Drive, Fishers, IN 46038.

Artist Bio:

From the moment I learned the basics of crocheting in the early 70s, I was intrigued by the free-flowing style used by designers. Those creations, worthy as museum pieces, were shared as how-to patterns in Women’s magazines at the time.

I am the Founder of The Crochet Guild of America.org (1994); and the 2014 Inductee into the CGOA Crochet Hall of Fame. In 2015, my book, The Fine Art of Crochet ~ Innovative Works from Twenty Contemporary Artists, documented an important and inspiring aspect of contemporary art today.

My passion for Fiber Art follows a wide range, whether it be crochet, embroidery, knitting, lacemaking, tatting, quilting or weaving. I’ve tried and enjoyed it all. I especially admire artists who can combine unique aspects from various fiber techniques to nourish not only the eye but also the soul of the viewer.

Today my mixed media sculptures aim to convey my passion for crochet as art with wonder and a desire to explore its full potential. My series, Covering My World in Crochet, combines crochet and found objects to enhance nature. Humorous titles invite viewers to see crochet as art in unexpected ways.
