Welcoming Week 2026

welcoming week: stories we share- courage to connect

Celebrate Welcoming Week with the Hamilton East Public Library!

From September 10-19, the Hamilton East Public Library will celebrate Welcoming Week, an annual campaign that invites communities around the globe to host events that deepen understanding and connection among community members. This year, HEPL will host a Dabke Dance Workshop where patrons can learn all about the history of the Dabke dance, as well as practice the steps themselves. Additionally, community members can submit recipes that represent their culture for a chance to have them featured in the first HEPL Community Cookbook!

Dabke Dance Workshop

Dabke is a traditional dance originating from the Levant region in Western Asia, performed primarily at joyous occasions such as weddings. It features dancing with community members, family, and friends in a circle or line. Movements include stomping, jumping, and holding hands.

Join us at Fishers Library on September 12 at 2 PM to learn the steps and history of Dabke presented by the Arab Alliance of Indiana and IndyReads.

Register here for the Dabke Dance Workshop.

HEPL Community Cookbook

Welcoming Week celebrates community, culture, and connection. One could argue that the best way to connect with people across the globe is through food. Everyone eats, and food can share a lot about culture. So, during Welcoming Week at the Library, we encourage you to share a recipe that is special to you, whether it is through culture, tradition, or memories. Feel free to include an anecdote on why it’s a special meal for you.

Select recipes will be put together in a print edition of the HEPL Community Cookbook, and a limited supply of copies will be available to take on a first-come first-served basis shortly after Welcoming Week. Keep an eye on HEPL’s social media pages to see when they will be available!

Submissions will be open only for the duration of Welcoming Week: September 10-19.

Please keep your recipes at 500 words or less.

Submitting a recipe does not guarantee inclusion in the final published community cookbook. If your recipe is chosen, you will be contacted via email.

Submit your recipe here!

Everyone who enters the library wants to feel supported and truly welcomed by neighbors and the larger community. That kind of support takes effort and an ongoing commitment to foster a sense of belonging and community-wide connection. Welcoming Week is where this commitment can start!
