Veteran’s Day is a time to honor the men and women who have served our country. For me, it’s also a moment to reflect on my family’s connection to the military and our legacy of service that spans generations. My dad and grandpa both served in the Navy, while my cousin is currently serving in the Air Force.
My dad served in the Navy during the Persian Gulf War as a boiler operator, working long shifts in the hot, demanding environment of the ship’s engine room. Over the years, he’s opened up more about his time in the Navy, sharing stories that range from the tough conditions he faced to the more lighthearted moments that come from being young and far from home. Some of my favorite stories are the ones about him and his buddies getting into trouble or pulling general shenanigans on or off the ship.
But, my dad’s service also took a toll. As he’s gotten older, he’s had some health struggles related to his time in the engine room, where the physical demands and conditions left a lasting impact. Despite these challenges, he’s proud of his Navy service, and I’ve come to appreciate the sacrifices he made—both during and after his time in the military.
Beyond the Navy, my cousin’s ongoing career in the Air Force reminds me of how military service continues to shape our family. Their commitment to service is a source of pride and admiration for me.
This Veteran’s Day, I’m reflecting on how the experiences of my dad, grandpa, and cousin have shaped my understanding of duty, sacrifice, and service. Each of them served in different ways, but their dedication to something larger than themselves has left a lasting impression on me. My dad’s stories of camaraderie and shenanigans, paired with his health struggles from working in the boiler room, are a reminder of the complex mix of pride and sacrifice that comes with serving. My grandpa’s service, along with my cousin’s Air Force career, shows me that military service leaves an impact long after the uniform comes off. Whether you’re honoring a veteran in your own life or simply taking a moment to reflect, I hope you’ll join me in recognizing the sacrifices made by so many.
