The Heartbreak Messenger
By: Alexander Vance
This book is a Young Hoosier Book Award nominee for the current school year. The story begins with Quentin, our hero, stumbling into a unique money-making business – delivering breakup messages. For a small fee he will deliver a message to your girlfriend or boyfriend, breaking off your relationship. Upgrades include (for an extra fee) things like a box of chocolates or flowers.
Some of the “deliveries” are comical, such as the time he is asked to deliver a dead rat to the lucky guy. Quentin’s relationship with his best friend, Abby, is put to the test. Through it all Quentin discovers that love can be complicated, and yes, breaking up is hard to do!
This was an enjoyable book. I would recommend it for those in fourth grade thru middle school.
