Young children learn in many different ways, including through play! During National Library Week we are encouraging families to “Find the Library at Your Place.” Read through the following library-inspired pretend play ideas with your children and see what excites them!
Storytime!
Host your own stuffed animal storytime at home.
- Set up a stuffed animal audience.
- Pick out a favorite book.
- Read your book with help from a grownup or talk about the pictures you see!
- Sing some of your favorite songs and rhymes.
- Make your own egg shaker from leftover Easter eggs.
Circulate!
Check out some books from your home library. In the library world, we call this “circulation.”
- Grab an object from your house that you can use as a “scanner.”
- Browse some bookshelves, a toy box, or even your kitchen.
- Use your scanner to check out books, toys, or other objects!
- Print this borrower card, or create your own receipt. Practice your writing skills by writing down what you checked out and the date of the return.
Make your own library card!
At HEPL kids can get their first library card at five years old, but kids of all ages can make a pretend one at home! (If you currently do not have a HEPL card, you can apply for a digital access card on our website.)
- Print this free template, or create your own library card.
- Practice writing your name on the card!
