Cathy Day grew up in Peru, Indiana and members of her extended family worked for the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus that wintered in Peru. By following members of the fictional Great Porter Circus family, the reader experiences the lives of the “Spin of Death” lady, a former clown and the manger’s wife. This is also available at the Fishers Library.
Jeanne M. Dams was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, and has lived there most of her life. In her youth, she read English mysteries and hoped to someday write those stories herself. She has published two mystery series, of which the Indiana Room has one, the Hilda Johansson Mysteryseries. Books in her other series, the Dorothy Martin Mystery series, are shelved in Public Services. Dams won the Agatha Award for Best First Novel in 1995 and combines cozy mysteries with family life stories. Some books in this series are also available at the Fishers Library.
Edward Eggleston was born in Vevay, Indiana in 1837. Due to poor health he was unable to attend school regularly, but was taught by his father. In 1856 he was ordained as a Methodist minister. In 1871 he published the Hoosier School-master: a story of back woods life in Indiana a fictional tale, based on his brother’s experience as a teacher in Madison, Indiana. Then in 1883 he published another work of fiction, the Hoosier School-boywhich told the struggles of a student during the 1850s.
