Juana and Lucas
By: Juana Medina
This is a story about Juana (pronounced “who-ah-nah”) who lives in Colombia. Juana tells her story of everyday life in Bogota, her friendships, her family and her struggles with learning “the English.” She doesn’t feel that she needs to learn English in school. Will anything change Juana’s mind?
This book has colorful illustrations and diagrams of things Juana loves which gives the story a diary like feel. Spanish words are randomly placed throughout the story so this would be a fun one to read with kids who are learning or interested in learning Spanish. This chapter book is recommended for readers in second grade and up. If your child likes Judy Moody or Ivy and Bean they should enjoy this book.
