My Summer Behind the Camera at the Library

If you had told me a year ago that I would spend my summer working in a library, taking photos of bubble foam and spinning prize wheels with giggling kids, I probably would have laughed. As a high school student with a sports-heavy photography portfolio, the world of libraries seemed quiet and far removed from fast-paced football games and buzzer-beating hockey shots. But thanks to my journalism teacher, Mr. William Delisle, who encouraged me and saw potential in my writing and creativity, I was offered the chance to work as a summer marketing intern at the Hamilton East Public Library. And, I can honestly say it has changed my life.

Capturing Joy in Unexpected Places

One of my favorite memories? Covering an event called Messy Munchkins, where toddlers played with a bubble foam machine. I captured what is still my favorite photo ever: a little girl laughing as foam floated through the air like magic. That moment showed me the joy of event and portrait photography in a way I had never experienced before.

Building a Diverse Portfolio

This internship helped me grow as both a photographer and a storyteller. I started with mostly sports in my portfolio, but now, I have vibrant snapshots of outreach events, library programs, and community laughter. From Color Dance (where I left covered in chalk dust and heart full of joy) to Library Card Sign-Up Month (where I’m currently filming a mini documentary on why people love their library), each moment has taught me something new. And yes, I still can’t get the song “This Little Light of Mine” out of my head thanks to those kids at Color Dance!

Making Magic Behind the Scenes

I got to ask silly questions whenever a kid landed on a color or animal, and their wild answers were always the highlight of my day. I also loved hanging out in Ignite Studio, the library’s creative space, when I finished editing. One day, I even made a self-portrait entirely out of red paper. Watching my creativity come to life in a space that encourages imagination was so empowering.

A Shoutout to the Best Team Ever

Everyone I met at the library was incredibly kind. People always smiled, helped me when I looked lost (which was a lot, thanks to those sneaky meeting rooms), and made me feel welcome. A special thank you goes to Kelsey Sweet, the literal sweetest person I’ve ever met. Her name really does match her personality. She was always flexible, cheerful, and gave me the freedom to explore different events and tasks that helped me grow.

Why Libraries Matter

Now, I know they’re about building community, supporting creativity, and creating spaces where everyone belongs. The library gave me a chance to grow, laugh, learn, and find my voice behind the camera. My inspiration started here.

If you haven’t visited the Hamilton East Public Library recently, I highly encourage you to check it out. Sign up for a library card, attend an event, explore Ignite Studio, or just come in and say hi. There’s so much more happening here than you might think!

Thank you, HEPL, for an unforgettable summer. I wish I could do this internship forever!
