Volunteers do an incredible amount of work to help nonprofit organizations fulfill their missions! The latest biennial Volunteering in America report from AmeriCorps shows almost 75.7 million Americans (about 28.3% of the population) formally volunteered about 5 billion hours between September 2022-2023, a significant increase in volunteering after the COVID pandemic subsided.

At Hamilton East Public Library, more than 400 volunteers currently help us out with a variety of assignments. Many have told us they’ve enjoyed getting to work with an organization they care about and getting to know HEPL staff and how they feel more connected to the communities in Fishers and Noblesville.
In 2024, HEPL volunteers contributed more than 3,200 service hours to the library through a variety of assignments. At the library, volunteers specialize in an area (we call it an assignment). They may find items on the shelves for patron holds, Crossroads Discovery Center volunteers digitize and add metadata to resources, and Program Support volunteers provide hospitality and assistance at library-sponsored programs. We also have assignments specifically for teen volunteers, including Teen Advisory Board, which helps us determine library programs and other initiatives for their age group. They can also help us keep the libraries neat by signing up for Tidying Teens.
