Leggo my Legos!

Leggo my Legos!

By: Connie Boomer

We all love those colorful little bricks called Legos. Well, maybe not so much when you find them with your bare feet in the middle of the night!

I learned from the Lego website that Lego toys were invented by a carpenter from Denmark, Ole Kirk Christiansen.  He began his company making wooden toys in 1932.  In 1934 he named his company Lego, which comes from the Danish phrase “leg godt” which means “play well”.  The company motto reflects the philosophy of Christiansen, “the best is never too good”.The Lego bricks we know were developed in 1958, and still interlock with those made today. I found that the Lego company designs Lego prosthetics, which allow a child to screw things like mechanical diggers and spaceships to the end of a limb.  How cool is that!

Here at the library we have a LEGO LEAGUE, which meets the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:00 P.M.  Kids are challenged to build something to fit the topic of the month.  The pictures are from the Feb. topic: Monsters!  As you can see, we have some very imaginative builders.

The Lego Company opened  Lego House in Billund, Denmark, last September.  It’s a building dedicated to all things Lego and shaped appropriately like large Lego bricks.  One thing for certain: if I ever make it to Denmark I will be visiting the Lego House!
