El Deafo
By: Cece Bell
El Deafo is an autobiographical non-fiction book about the experience of becoming deaf as a young child. The author contracted meningitis at the age of four, which resulted in her becoming profoundly deaf. El Deafo describes the author’s life after becoming ill through the fourth grade. She talks about learning to use The Phonic Ear in school, learning to lip read, and using hearing aids. Themes include things like friendships, boys, and school work, and how they relate to her as a deaf child. This is the first book I have read that is written in the graphic format. I was unsure how I would like reading a graphic, but was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this book for children in grades three and up.
