Celebrating Latinx & Hispanic Heritage Month at Your Library

hispanic heritage month

By Claudia S., Public Services Librarian

Every year, from September 15 to October 15, we come together to honor the contributions, culture, and history of Latinx and Hispanic communities during National Hispanic Heritage Month. At the Hamilton East Public Library, we invite you to explore and celebrate the richness of Latin American culture, from iconic authors to breathtaking art, from tantalizing culinary traditions to impactful community programs.

Spotlight on Latin American Authors

The world of literature has been deeply enriched by Latin American voices. From magical realism to contemporary fiction, Latinx authors have crafted narratives that resonate with global audiences. Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel laureate from Colombia, introduced the world to magical realism with his masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude. Argentina’s Jorge Luis Borges and Chile’s Isabel Allende have also left lasting marks on literature, each shaping the landscape of storytelling in unique ways. At the library, we have a wide selection of books by these authors, as well as many more, allowing you to dive into their worlds.

Art and Cultural Contributions: Frida Kahlo and Beyond

Latin American art has always been a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural expression. One of the most iconic figures in this realm is Frida Kahlo, whose surreal, emotionally intense paintings explore identity, pain, and the human condition. Kahlo’s art has become a symbol of resilience and empowerment, especially for women and marginalized communities. Her work, along with that of other Latin American artists, such as Diego Rivera and Fernando Botero, continues to inspire and influence global artistic movements.

In addition to the incredible collection of art books available at the library, we encourage you to explore exhibits at major museums across the country. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. regularly hosts exhibitions displaying Latin American culture, while other museums like the Museo del Barrio in New York City and the Latin American Art Museum in Los Angeles (MOLAA) provide deeper insight into the cultural richness of the region.

Culinary Delights and Cookbooks

Latin American cuisine is as diverse as its culture. From the savory street foods of Mexico to the rich flavors of Brazil’s feijoada, the region’s culinary heritage is as colorful and dynamic as its people. At HEPL, we offer an array of cookbooks that highlight the flavors of Latin America, whether you are interested in perfecting a traditional dish like empanadas or exploring new fusion recipes. These cookbooks are an excellent way to experience Latinx culture through the lens of food—one of the most unifying elements of any community.

Did You Know?

Using the terms Hispanic or Latinx depends on the context and the community you are speaking to. Hispanic emphasizes a shared language and culture tied to Spanish-speaking countries, while Latinx embraces a broader, more inclusive understanding of the Latin American diaspora, acknowledging the variety of experiences and identities within the community.

Community Programs

Our library is proud to offer programs that reflect and support the Latinx community in our area. For those looking to improve their English language skills, our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and ENL conversation groups are an essential resource. These classes help empower individuals to communicate effectively, create opportunities for success, and enrich their day-to-day lives.

This month, we invite you to join us in honoring the enduring contributions of Latinx and Hispanic individuals. Whether you’re exploring the work of celebrated authors, savoring a new recipe, or engaging with colorful art, there’s something for everyone. Together, let’s celebrate the vibrant heritage that has shaped our society and continues to inspire future generations.
